Art class with ms. Smidt
Welcome! Thank you for visiting my site! It is wonderful to be back at school teaching Art to my 400+ budding artists. I have so much to share with you about what my students have be creating. Please check back periodically. I will be updating the site monthly or more.
After teaching at Plympton for 6 years, I've finally created my own Square 1 Art design. I'm so excited to recieve my canvas bag and mug! It's also a good feeling to know that some of the money from my order will help support Plymton!

What have we been up to?
Kindergarten
Students have been using different art materials to make shapes based compositions. We've made circle cats, crescent creatures, stripey square-bots, and are looking forward to using patterns to design crayon resist ovals. We've also talked a lot about texture. Students learned how to show how something feels by overlapping and repeating lines.
Grade 1
Students have been doing lots of painting these days in order to learn about and reinforce our color mixing skills. Students just finished their primary and secondary color pattern pops project with a focus on color mixing and careful pattern making. We'll be delving into our annual spring-themed project which focuses on the work of Georgia O'Keeffe.
Grade 2
Students have been finishing up a painting picture with a focus on mixing secondary colors from primary colors. We're taking our color mixing knowledge to the next level in learning how to mix tints and shades. We'll use this new knowledge in our upcoming annual spring-themed project based on symmetry, tints, and shades.
Grade 3
Students have been learning about and reinforcing their knowledge of warm and cool colors along with the use of foreground and background in a composition. We put this knowledge to use in a Matisse inspired composition that we're just finishing up. We'll be beginning our annual spring themed project based on Henry David Thoreau's Walden pond through the use of mixed media collage.
Grade 4
We have been talking a lot about symmetry these days. Students have made two different compositions showing their knowledge through a collaborative quilt style project and a radial symmetry project. Look for some of this work in the hallway outside the art room. We have begun a unit on figure drawing. Students are in the process of drawing one another, themselves, and sports figures in order to learn how to draw a figure more realistically.
Grade 5
Students have been learning how to draw a realistic self-portrait through looking at one another and themselves. As well, they have been introduced to the basic rules of drawing facial proportions. Students have begun their final self-portrait compositions showing what they have learned along with a bit about themselves in the way they draw their backgrounds. Look for these compositions toward the end of the year. They'll be displayed in the first floor foyer outside of the library.

Fundraiser Banks
an all school art project to benefit the charity
A heart for Syria
Here are some of the banks the Plympton students made for this year's study of Asia. We chose A Heart For Syria as our charity this year. Students created mosaic-style artwork on their banks in connection with the ancient artwork that could be found in Syria. Look for many many banks in the windows of the library in the coming weeks. Great job, Plympton artists!!
